Matcha latte at home - step-by-step guide
Matcha lattes have taken the world by storm - and with the right matcha and technique, you can easily make cafe-quality lattes at home. Here's everything you need to know.
What is matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder from Japan where whole tea leaves are ground into an intensely green powder. Unlike regular tea, you drink the entire leaf - which provides a much higher concentration of antioxidants, L-theanine, and caffeine. The result is a calm, focused energy without the nervous jitters from coffee.
Choose the right matcha quality
There are two quality levels: ceremonial and culinary. For matcha latte, you want ceremonial grade. Culinary matcha is bitter and better suited for baking.
Equipment you need
- Matcha bowl (chawan) or regular bowl
- Bamboo whisk (chasen)
- Fine sieve
- Milk frother or small saucepan
Step by step - classic matcha latte
- Sift 1-2 tsp of matcha powder into a bowl to avoid clumps
- Add 60 ml of hot water (70-80°C - not boiling)
- Whisk vigorously in a W-motion until a froth forms and no clumps remain
- Heat 200 ml of milk (oat, almond, or cow's milk) and froth it
- Pour the matcha into a glass, add the milk, and froth on top
- Sweeten with a little honey if desired
Variations to try
- Iced matcha latte - pour the matcha over ice and add cold milk
- Matcha with coconut milk - creamier and a little sweeter
- Dirty matcha - matcha latte with an espresso shot on top
